We need to contribute to the society by creating awareness of high importance of early recognition and early treatment of this major killer
Acute heart attack- known in medical terminology as Acute ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) is very rampant, occurs in all adult age groups, a major killer and has a significant family and social impact when a young family member dies.
The good part is; it is also one of the few very serious and life-threatening ailments WHERE THE LIFE CAN BE SAVED QUICKLY IF RECOGNIZED IN TIME AND TREATED IN TIME. There are two major methods to treat- an emergency angioplasty (to open the blocked artery in the cath lab) or by giving a medication which can do the similar job. Last 15 years research has proved beyond doubt that opening the artery by the cath is a far more superior method. And there is no doubt that either of these should be carried out as soon as possible.
To achieve this goal; we need to educate all healthcare personnel involved at whatever stage – to identify quickly those patients suffering from STEMI and start initial treatment; then arrange their transfer to the next appropriate centre. As a corollary; finally, the population should also be educated to take quick and correct action when they themselves or their kith-kin suffer from STEMI.
With this goal, I have founded SHAKE: Saving Heart Attacks Key Efforts for more generic and widespread coverage.
